With Jon Hassell, 1982

Sunday, April 27, 2014

I just uploaded an old cassette recording I made during a live performance in which I played with the Jon Hassell Performance Group in Avingnon, France, in June of 1982. Jon Hassell on trumpet, Michael Brook doing live processing/sampling and kalimba, JA Dino Dean on slit drum and percussion, and me on udu (clay pot drum) and keyboard (a Casio 202, processed by Michael). I think this was the first time Jon ever played without a pitched drone, because his old scalatron blew up during sound check. All the better to hear his unique trumpet technique.

Hi Thierry,

No. No full recording of this concert exists, as far as I know.

That was fantastic!

I’m a big fan of the trumpet, and listening to that was quite delightful. A shame that there is no full concert as queried by Thierry.

The CD “The Surgeon Of The Nightsky Restores Dead Things By The Power Of Sound” would be the closest thing to this. It’s a collection of live performance from a 1986 tour, I believe. All simply duets with J. A. Dean. Beautiful. Out of print but occasionally on eBay.
